The Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing has been a self-financing contract research and development unit based in Brunel University since 1987. The core interests of the Centre have been the development of materials and materials processing technologies. The Centre is accredited with the standard ISO 9001 (2000).

Expertise

Development of processing machinery and plastics compounds. Processing, characterisation and testing of many types of materials including the following:

  • structured liquids
  • soft solids
  • metals
  • ceramics
  • all types of thermoplastics
  • natural materials and
  • polymers: filled and reinforced polymers including nano-composites.
Materials characterisation and testing

The Centre has or has access to the following facilities: DSC: TGA & mass spectrometer: DMA: plate and capillary rheometers: light microscopy: electron microscopy: FTIR: surface X-ray analysis: standard mechanical testing: nano-indentation and AFM

Services Offered

The Centre can work on projects as short as a half a day up to major programmes lasting several years. All of the equipment can be hired and in some situations individuals from companies could operate the equipment if they are properly trained.

Current Projects

A selection of current programmes of work are given below:

  • Development of a novel external medical support structure;
  • Development of biodegradable packaging;
  • The processing and properties of carbon nano-tube-filled composites;
  • The development and processing of bio-ceramic coatings for implant applications.
