Case Study

THE CHARITY
London Refugee Voice (LRV) is in fact an umbrella body representing other local refugee organisations. It’s run by and for refugees to help its members’ capacity build and be more effective in their purposes.

THE STUDENT
Anna Stinson joined Roehampton University’s Voluntary Action Management masters course.

WHAT SHE DID
Anna undertook a management audit, a compulsory element of her course placement, and handled discrete projects to the mutual benefit of both parties.

Her role included a range of activities including the research of funding streams, assisting in the bid process, engaging and networking with client groups, designing admin and marketing systems and writing newsletters. She even managed to find time to organise the AGM.

LRV's membership grew as a direct result of Anna’s input and they were very sorry to see her move on at the end of the placement period.

WHAT ANNA SAID:
“It was a most interesting and enjoyable time and it had many challenges too. With the volume of course work to be handled, the tutor’s support was invaluable.
I learned so much from my time there. It helped my confidence levels and communication skills. It really impacted on my career choices at the end of the programme. Undertaking an audit and reporting my findings really helped develop my skills and understanding of what is really needed to manage a small charity, help it sustain and grow.”

Anna went on to complete her masters successfully and subsequently obtained full time employment as Development Officer with the Befriending Network, a charity that supports people living at home with terminal illnesses. She says her current success would have been harder to achieve without her previous placement experience.
