Entrepreneurship Modules at Kingston University

1. BS2004/3004 Entrepreneurship
2. BS2003/3003 Entrepreneurship: Young Enterprise

The University, courtesy of funding from a successful HEIF bid by the WestFocus consortium of universities (www.westfocus.org.uk) has made four cross faculty elective modules available to students.  Details of these electives are described below:

1. BS2004/3004 Entrepreneurship (i.e. the same elective at Levels 2 and 3)

These electives are targeted at students from different university faculties and are designed to encourage enterprise skills.  Students in various faculties/programs have already expressed considerable interest in these modules - which are available for both second and third year students.

The module objectives aim to achieve the following:

  • Develop students’ enterprising skills, attributes and behaviours through self-review, idea-generation and project planning
  • Build on students’ creative and technical skills by focusing on how their ideas can be developed into genuine entrepreneurial opportunities
  • Provide students with an understanding of both the internal and external factors that influence entrepreneurial performance
  • Introduce students to key small business management concepts, including creativity, innovation, entrepreneurial marketing, value creation, and resource management
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, and make full use of the many sources of information and assistance available within the university and enterprise support environment .

Students will increase their skills and knowledge in four key areas: understanding the nature of enterprise; the personal skills required for success in a variety of contexts; market economics and financial literacy; and an understanding of business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Students will do so working with a wide range of students from different subject areas.

2. BS2003/3003  Entrepreneurship: Young Enterprise (i.e. the same elective at Levels 2 and 3)

These electives are also targeted at students from across the University and give them the opportunity to create, set-up and trade a real business or enterprise as part of their degree programme.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Contribute to the planning, creation and implementation of a new enterprise strategy, requiring the development and presentation of a formal business plan, company report and accounts
  • Develop an enterprise to the point where actual trading takes place
  • Evaluate their entrepreneurial capabilities and analyse how their specific academic knowledge and experience affected the performance of the trading enterprise
  • Assess the potential of SMEs as future employers and reflect on self-employment and enterprise creation as possible future career options

N.B. Students are required to form groups of 4-5 students. Students should be aware that each group must pay an upfront business cost of £200 to the charity Young Enterprise to cover liability etc. However, students can arrange a loan with HSBC Bank to cover this expense, so it should not present a significant obstacle to taking the module.

Next steps

We are now seeking to ensure students’ expressions of interest are converted to module registration since the modules (esp. Young Enterprise) require a rapid commencement once the academic year starts. Students must register with Young Enterprise for which there is a deadline early in October. (see www.young-enterprise.org.uk/pub/public_programmes_gp.jsp for further information)

Blackboard is an important part of the learning experience so it is essential that students are registered in good time in order to access the materials available to support these modules.  These materials form a very important part of the module support structure.  Without access to the Blackboard module and Young Enterprise, participation is severely handicapped.

Action Required:

Students should convert their interest into registration for the module at the earliest possible moment. Late starts are not possible for the module.  Please contact Cresso Scarlett (65144) or by email: C.Scarlett@kingston.ac.uk

Course Directors wishing to learn more about the modules and their learning outcomes in order to ensure successful student registration should contact Catherine Gurling (65425)  or by e-mail: C.Gurling@kingston.ac.uk
